They had very small eyes. Owls were the animals which ate fruits. They were always finding fruits. One day, an owl saw a Schima wallichii tree bearing many fruits. Then the owl plucked one and ate that but it was not ready to eat yet. He thought, "Hmm, maybe it is not ripe yet." "It is not mature yet." "It is not fully grown yet." He waited and waited, wondering when the fruits would ripen. His eyes were getting bigger and bigger while waiting for the fruits to ripen. The owl's eyes got bigger as he waited for the fruits to ripen. But the fruits were not mature yet. Then one day, he decided to eat them, whether they were ripe or not. "What kind of fruit would take so long to ripen?" When he plucked the fruit and cracked it, there was nothing inside it. The fruit over there and the fruit here, when he cracked them open, there was nothing inside. The owl was so surprised. His eyes became bigger than before since then. That's why there is a Kachin proverb that says, "An owl waits for the Schima wallichii fruit to ripen." It is said so when something one is expecting does not succeed for any length of time.
