Description:Translation (Rita Seng Mai & Keita Kurabe) I'm going to talk about a grateful crow. Once upon a time, there was a girl. One day, her mother told her to guard the rice that they spread under the sun. Her mother said. "Keep your eyes on the rice." "Don't feed the rice to the birds." "I will beat you if you feed." "Guard carefully." "Do you understand?" "We are going to cook that rice this evening." While she was guarding the rice one crow came near her and asked for the rice. "Hello, little girl! I am starving. I beg you. Give me some rice, please." The girl said. "Mom told me" "To guard the rice." "I can't give it to you because we are going to eat it this evening." "Mom told me that she would beat me if I fed the rice to you." But the starving crow said again. "Please let me have some." "I don't need much." "Just give me some." "Please let me eat some as I am starving." The crow asked her. She felt sorry for the crow because it kept asking her. But she said again. "It's true that you are hungry." "But mom will scold me." "She will beat me." "I can't give you this rice because we will eat it this evening." The crow asked again. "Just a little." "I won't eat a lot." "Just give me some." The crow asked again and again, so the girl felt sorry for it and said. "Then have some of that rice in the corner over there." "Don't eat too much." "Don't eat too much, or mom will beat me." The crow said. "Thank you very much!" "Your mother won't beat you." "If she does, I'll repay you." "You know the big tamarind tree at the outskirts of the village, don't you?" "If your mother beats you, just come to the tree." Then the girl let the crow eat the rice. While the crow was eating the rice, the girl fell asleep. When she woke up, she found that the crow had eaten a lot of rice. When she saw that, she said, "I told it many times!" "I told the crow not to eat so much, but it ate so much!" She was worried, thinking that "Now mom will beat me." Then her mother came back. When her mother came home in the evening she saw that much of the dried rice was missing, and said to her daughter. "I told you this morning." "To guard the rice!" "You didn't, so the birds ate it!" Then she tried to hit her with a stick. The girl said. "No, Mom, a crow came." "It said it was very hungry, so I felt sorry and fed it." But her mother beat her for not guarding the rice. After that, the girl did as the crow told her. She remembered the crow's words that "If your mother beats you, come to the big tamarind tree at the outskirts of the village." So she went to the outskirts of the village. She went to the tamarind tree at the outskirts of the village. There was indeed a crow's nest on the tree. The girl called out to the crow's nest. "Hey, Mr. Crow, mom beat me because you ate the rice." "So I've come to you." "You said you would return the favor, so here I am." The girl cried out to the crow's nest. Then the crow came out of its nest and said, "Yes, I really do repay you." "I'll put the ladder down now." "Would you like a wooden ladder or a golden ladder?" When the girl heard this, she said, "I don't think a golden ladder would suit me." "A wooden ladder would suit me better." "Just put down the wooden ladder." The crow let the wooden ladder down. She used the wooden ladder to climb up the tree to the crow's nest. She arrived at the nest. When she reached the nest, the crow asked again, "Here are two boxes! Which one do you want to take?" "The small one or the big one? Take one you like!" The girl said, "How can I carry the big box?" "I can't!" "I will just take the small box." Then the crow said, "All right. Take the small box!" The crow gave her the box. She took the box and went back to her house. She climbed down the wooden ladder and went home. When she arrived home, she opened the box. Inside the small box, there were lots of gold. Because there were lots of gold in the box, the mother and girl became wealthy. Then one of their neighbours heard that news. Hearing that, the neighbor asked, "How did you become so wealthy? She asked. The girl's mother replied. "The crow that ate the dried rice returned the favor." "That's how we became so wealthy." When the neighbor heard this, she was envious. She tried to do the same according to what she heard. When she spread the rice under the sun and let her daughter watch it, the crow came there to ask for food like the previous time. It came and ate the rice. When the crow ate it, the girl said, "You've eaten the rice." "So mom will beat me." "What will you give me now?" Then the crow said, "Come to the big tamarind tree at the outskirts of the village." "If your mother beats you." The neighbor really hit her daughter. The girl also went to the tamarind tree and said to the crow, "Mr. Crow, mom beat me because you ate the rice." The crow then asked the girl, "Now I will put down the ladder for you." "Which ladder would you like: the golden ladder or the wooden ladder?" When the girl heard this, she answered, "I will use the golden ladder to climb up." She used the golden ladder to climb up to the crow's nest in the tree. After she climbed up the tree, the crow asked her, "I will give you one of these two boxes." "Do you want the big one?" "Do you want the small one?" The girl said, "I will take the big box." She chose the big box and took it home. When she arrived home, her and her mother were very happy. "Come on, we can be wealthy too," they said and they opened the box. A big snake came out and bit them both to death. This is the end of the story. What this story tells us is that we should not be jealous of others. Don't be jealous of other people's gratitude. Your heart must be sincere. Thank you very much. Transcription (Lu Awng) Ya hkai dan na maumwi gaw "Chyeju htang chye ai u hka a lam" re. Moi shawng de num sha langai mi nga ai da.
