Description:The reports show that between 2003 and 2008, Anderson and Harrison focused their attention on the collection and analysis of a substantial quantity of new Chulym field recordings, analysis of legacy data from the 1970s, a revised edition of the Ös (Chulym) storybook, the preparation of three articles on Ös in the peer-refereed journal Turkic Languages, as well as public lectures and conference talks that highlighted Ös data. The researchers made a number of linguistic discoveries, observing in their final report, “We found, for example, that most of the 1970s unpublished legacy materials archived in Tomsk represented the Lower Chulym dialect (now believed extinct). The materials we have collected differ consistently and considerably, being predominantly from the Middle Chulym dialect, with a lesser presence of the Upper Chulym dialect. Among our small (and shrinking) pool of speakers, we found hyper-variation of the kind reported to exist in moribund speech communities, but thus far only scantily documented. We documented the complex morphosyntax of Ös auxiliary verbs, which we found to be quite divergent from other Turkic languages (and in some ways very archaic), thus providing new data for typological studies.”
